Battery energy storage costs have reached a historic turning point, with new research from clean energy think tank Ember revealing that storing electricity now costs just $65 per megawatt-hour (MWh) in global markets outside China and the United States.
With a CAPEX subsidy of approximately $20/kWh, current BESS prices are estimated near $120/kWh. At the component level, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells for stationary energy storage applications have dropped to around $40/kWh in Chinese domestic markets as of November 2025.
Figure ES-2 shows the overall capital cost for a 4-hour battery system based on those projections, with storage costs of $143/kWh, $198/kWh, and $248/kWh in 2030 and $87/kWh, $149/kWh, and $248/kWh in 2050.
