The commercial success of ALD Al2 O 3 in commercial silicon solar cells has shown that ALD can be cost-effective in high-volume manufacturing. We consequently believe that ALD will play an increasingly important role in future solar cell manufacturing.
In this review, we focus on various applications of ALD-based thin films in solar cells, including industrial silicon, organic, thin film, and quantum dot solar cells. ALD films are used as a surface passivation layer, buffer layer, window layer, absorber layer, electron/hole contact or transparent conductive oxide in these types of solar cells.
Morales-Masis et al. deposited a-InZnO at 60 °C and used as TCO for silicon heterojunction solar cells to obtain cell efficiency of 21.5%. In 2 O 3 doped with 0.3–0.5% Zr has been demonstrated by Koida et al. to have mobility >100 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and transparency comparable to ITO grown using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) .
