The primary objective of this study is to evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of an integrated photovoltaic system that combines solar energy generation and rainwater harvesting, aiming to enhance water and energy sustainability in arid and semi-arid agricultural regions where torrential rainfall occurs.
HOMER® energy simulation software was deployed in the simulation. The result shows a satisfactory net present cost for the possible integration of a pumped hydro storage system in a photovoltaic generation plant as the most viable option to provide power at a power supply probability of 99.9% and water for irrigation.
The results obtained in this study demonstrate that the integration of photovoltaic systems with rainwater harvesting is a technically viable and high-impact solution for water and energy management in arid and semi-arid regions.
Conclusion This work proposed a sustainable integrated strategy to help an African community to access electrical energy and water supply for irrigation and domestic use. Based on the simulation results from HOMER® software, the scaled electrical power requirement of an Uhuelem-Amoncha community is 165 kWh/day.
